After a, Virgin Mobile USA got their unlimited internet deal off the ground ? Woohoo for $40 a month for unlimited internet! NOTE: post updated with links to Broadband2Go software download links Here are some photos of the setup process and some initial speed results at the end: isn’t the modem cute?! ? modem intimidating a pen it switches to EVDO after you activate it and you can see the regular looking connection manager here Ohh shucks, only 400GB of bandwidth left;-). Virgin Mobile/Sprint network: Download speeds here in smalltown Missouri are very decent: connecting at 3mbs with 150kbs-200kbs actual download speeds.
Verizon: This compares to Verizon in this town where 120kbs actual DL is best case and the connectivity drops out like AT&T on a bad day;-). Normally I like Verizon but in this particular town they seem saturated ? Conclusion on Virgin Mobile Broadband2Go: good so far! 2010.08.27 Update: ping times, Games, Remote Desktop Connection requested some ping and latency info. Surprisingly, I haven’t been able to do a regular ping from the command line (the request always times out) so I had to resort to and here are the results from tonight: (click for the full size version) The screenshot makes it look pretty terrible tonight, but I’m not sure those results are accurate. Games: I tried SC2 and it played very nicely. Haven’t tried VOIP yet Remote Desktop: I opened a couple simultaneous RDC connections and they were usable. Not the most responsive I’ve ever seen, but fine for server administration or other routine (non-image heavy) activities.
2011.04.18 Update: BroadBand2Go is no longer unlimited ? Unfortunately in January 2011 Virgin Mobile reduced the monthly download limit to 5GB. When that happened I switched back to my Verizon (originally Alltel) unlimited account. At some point later I believe Virgin mobile further reduced the monthly download limit to approximately 2.5GB before being throttled. ? It seems like quite a “bait and switch” by Virgin Mobile to get people to signup for their service touting unlimited downloading, only to decrease it drastically a few months later. Howdy John, thanks for the good question! I’m not sure on UL/DL but I would guess it’s combined.
Latency.seems. fine, but I haven’t had much luck measuring it. It actually seems like Virgin Movbile (VM) is blocking pings?! Sounds crazy I need to try it with the card directly connected instead of through the Cradlepoint router. SC2 works very well, pages load decently fast, and RDC works fine. Haven’t tried SSH yet but I wouldn’t expect it to be a problem. Hollar if you want any other info/tests:-).

I recently purchased Virgin Mobile Broadband2Go Novatel USB wireless internet device(modem) which I use with my 2.8G iMac Intel Core 2 Duo running Snow Leopard Mac OS X 10.6.5. The original USB modem I purchased initially made enough internet connection to register the device and select monthly service, which at unlimited usage for forty bucks a month was and remains main reason why I use this service, but after one evening of use, the device would then only redirect me to Virgin Mobile's home page. I was instructed to return the modem to place of purchase for exchange of new modem by Virgin Mobile rep. The new device briefly made connection only to default back to redirect to VM home page. After speaking with VM tech support I was overnight mailed a third modem, specifically altered to work with Macintosh, at the time Virgin Mobile internet connection was PC only based.
This third device works fine, but there's a problem I've had with how the network connection set up from the beginning is made. There's no info prompt from the device for manual connection settings with Mac Network settings and the device does not seem to configure settings on it's own with initial driver download. This omission apparently fails to place a script modem in user/library/modem scripts and as of a result I believe causes my connection to fail regularly and occasionally freezes my mac resulting in having to turn off my mac without being able to log off or shutdown. The only script usable in modem scripts is Vendor: Apple, Model: Apple Modem (v:32) even though there is a Novatel modem script in the library. I can't seem to find anywhere online Novatel or Virgin Mobile Broadband2Go modem script and I get no help from VM tech support.
Is there a solution to resolve this issue?
Click to expand.it is confusing, especially if you're used to their phones. The good news, if you can call it that, is that you can log in, even after your GBs run out, so you can easily add more by charging to your credit card, or using a prepaid card (that wouldn't be activated until you typed in the numbers) - or you could put money into your account but not apply them to a 'plan' until you need it.
The trick is to not activate too soon, because as soon as you charge or enter the info on the prepaid top up card, the calendar limits go into effect. They really should revise this. People would spend MORE money, not less. They may not want to deal with the logistics of managing the carry over, but that's silly, since they are tracking usage anyway. Probably it's.(pure speculation) because they're using a variation of the sprint software and there are only limited ways to modify the accounting procedures. Virgin Mobile Mifi I have had mine for a week and used it a lot.
So far not one MB has been subtracted from my 300mbs. But, every couple of days it becomes 'not activated'. I have to call because it won't activate on line. It just says there is a problem with my wifi or account. So far Virgin Mobile reps say they do not know why but I am not alone.
I would not mind using it free if I could activate on line and not call. The wait times have been very, very long. One more time and I am returning it and going to Verizon mifi. Don't like that because it is a 2 yr commitment or no contract and $15 a day. Click to expand. For me it was pretty good. I haven't needed the unlimited plan but a few weeks before they released that I had purchased a 300 MB pack for a short vacation.
I only ended up using like 10 MB so I had this genius idea to use it to stream pandora in my car. It actually worked really well on a 2 hour trip. I only had one mishap the entire way and it was just along 1 mile of highway. Then again pandora's streaming music is relatively low bandwidth.
I was expecting this to eat up all of my data and it only used like 70 MB. 2 hours of music in 70 MB and it sounded GOOD? I live in Florida too so Sprint's coverage is a lot more over here than it is over on the west coast.
It looks like a lot around the Portland area is Verizon and the virgin mobile mifi doesn't support roaming. I don't get it because the pandora app on my android phone SUCKS. I can't even walk down the street without it cutting out 50 million times. And my android phone uses sprints network as well. Click to expand.LOL.
No it was fine. The reason I was concerned in the first place is because the customer service agent I spoke too was uninformed and told me that I would need to find a wifi hotspot if I ran out of data and needed to add more. I don't want to buy data unless I know I am going to need it and unless I know I will be in a coverage area.It isn't a problem though. You can log into the router and it allows you to access your account and add data when you have no MBs. And obviously if you can't access your account you don't have 3g where you are so no point in spending the money.
If your use exceeds your monthly allowance you will be charged at the out-of-bundle rate of £15/GB. Flexibility to switch to a higher tariff - and back down If you find you’re using more data than your current tariff gives you, you can move up to another tariff that gives you more, whenever you want.
